Jefferson Hills Natural Stream Design Project

Natural Stream Channel Design was utilized to solve the problem instead of a more common traditional hard engineering technique such as rip-rapping the banks.

Natural Stream Channel Design works to restore a degraded stream channel to its natural stability by reconnecting the stream to its floodplain. It also utilizes in-stream structures to dissipate the streams energy. These structures focus this energy toward the center of the channel and create fish habitat in the form of pools and runs. This technique also employs a planting along the stream banks that will provide long-term stability and protection of the stream reach. This planting of native willows, sycamores and box elders will eventually help to buffer stream temperatures, provide food and shelter for wildlife and create a natural floodplain that helps to decrease stream energy during flooding and also filters storm runoff.

This innovative technique has many advantages over traditional techniques:

  • It preserves the natural integrity of the Peters Creek stream corridor.
  • Reduces long-term maintenance costs by helping to solve the problem rather than just dealing with the symptoms.
  • Creates additional fish habitat and helps to restore the natural biological integrity of the stream reach.
  • Provides both bank and channel stability in a way that works with nature and not against it.
  • Peters Creek and its steeply wooded slopes and floodplains are truly a treasure to all the communities through which it flows. The Peters Creek Watershed Association applauds Jefferson Hills efforts in undertaking this worthwhile and forward-thinking project. Solving Peters Creeks stormwater problems in a way that also maintains its scenic character as well as its biological integrity helps to maintain our quality of life. All of those who run, bike, fish, hunt and walk this portion of Peters Creek benefit from these types of projects. We also understand that we all have a responsibility to help assure that the stream bank planting is successful and that efforts to control stormwater in a responsible manner throughout the Peters Creek Watershed is essential.
