Recent Events
- PCWA recently accepted a 2 acre parcel of steep wooded slope along Peters Creek in Jefferson Hills from the Laura Bedell Shuck Estate.
- PCWA completed sampling for the PA DEP Bacteria Monitoring Program during the summer of 2010. Sites on Peters Creek, Piney Fork, Lick Run, Catfish Run and Sleepy Hollow Run were sampled 10 times throughout the summer months to determine whether streams meet the standard for recreational use.
- PCWA led Ringgold High School Botany & Zoology students on two walks during the 2009-2010 school year. In the fall we concentrated on plant identification and in the spring we identified birds and did a stream study.
- PCWA is working with 7th grade science teacher Jennifer Cramer, at the Pleasant Hills Middle School, on their “Trout in the Classroom” program this year. Her students are raising Brook Trout from eggs. A field trip to Peters Creek took place in May of 2010 to release the trout and to learn more about Peters Creek and how everyone must work together to keep it healthy.
- A GreenPrint has been completed for the Peters Creek Watershed. A Greenprint is a land conservation plan that identifies and prioritizes highly functional greenspace contributing to stormwater management, scenic character and preservation of biodiversity. This Greenprint will help guide our land conservation efforts. A pamphlet explaining the Peters Creek Watershed Greenprint has been developed utilizing a grant from the Dominion Foundation.
- Work on the Peters Creek Watershed Assessment continues. Fish and macroinvertebrate sampling is complete. Visual assessment and AMD sampling is complete. We are now developing the Peters Creek Watershed Management Plan from data collected. This project is funded by a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Growing Greener Grant.
- PCWA received a $1400 grant from the Dominion Foundation for 2010 to sample flows and metal concentrations at 7 of the watersheds worst Abandoned Mine Drainage discharges. This information will be utilized to design remediation facilities for these sites.
