Recent Events
- PCWA is working with 7th grade science teacher, Jennifer Cramer at the Pleasant Hills Middle School to initiate a “Trout in the Classroom” program this year. Her students are raising Brook Trout from eggs and learning about water quality and Peters Creek in the process.
- The Peters Creek and Piney Fork stream clean-up was a great success THANKS to the many volunteers from the South Park High School Environmental Club, Montour Trail Council, Tri-Community Anglers, PCWA and just plain residents who showed up early on a beautiful Saturday morning to lend a hand. Thanks also to South Park Twp and Jefferson Hills Borough for removing the large mounds of all sorts of trash.
- A GreenPrint has been completed for the Peters Creek Watershed. A Greenprint is a land conservation plan that identifies and prioritizes highly functional greenspace contributing to stormwater management, scenic character and preservation of biodiversity. This Greenprint will help guide our land conservation efforts. A pamphlet explaining the Peters Creek Watershed Greenprint has been developed utilizing a grant from the Dominion Foundation.
- Work on the Peters Creek Watershed Assessment is in progress. A visual assessment of all significant stream reaches within the Peters Creek watershed has been completed and AMD discharges identified during the the visual assessment have been sampled. Fish and macroinvertebrate sampling are scheduled for April. Volunteers are needed. This project is funded by a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Growing Greener Grant.
- PCWA received a $1,500 grant from NiSource (Columbia Gas of PA) to help restore a section of streambank along Peters Creek that has been damaged by excessive flooding and erosion.
- PCWA received a $500 grant from the Dominion Foundation to purchase stream monitoring equipment.
Upcoming Events
- The Western PA Conservancy will be performing fish sampling and macroinvertebrate sampling throughout the Peters Creek watershed on April 23-24, 28-30 and May 4-5 as part of the Peters Creek Watershed Assessment funded by the DEP Growing Greener Program. - The South Hills Friends of The Montour Trail will hold their next meeting at 6:30 PM on Wednesday May 13, 2009 in the Community Room of the Jefferson Hills Municipal Building.
- The Jefferson Hills Environmental Quality Board will hold their next meeting at 7:00 PM on Thursday May 14, 2009 in the Community Room of Jefferson Hills Municipal Building. Call Tom Donohue at 412 714-3600 for more information.
- The Peters Township Environmental Quality Board's next meeting is Tuesday May 12, 2009 at 7:30 in the Peters Twp Municipal Building at 610 E. Murray Rd, McMurray, PA, Call 724-941-6161 for more information.
- The Tri-Community Anglers will hold their next meeting at 8:00 PM on Monday May11, 2009 at the American Legion Post 75 on Miller Ave. in Clairton. Visit their web-site at tcaa.peterscreek.org for more information.
- The Washington County Watershed Alliance General Membership meeting will be held at 7:00 PM on Wednesday June 17, 2009 at the Washington County Conservation District Ag office, Meadow Lands.
